Adults Workshop 3: Introduction to Kurinuki

£55.00

Kurinuki is a traditional Japanese ceramic technique in which a vessel is carved from a solid block of clay. Material is removed rather than built up, gradually revealing the final form. Meditative and sculptural, the process values interior and exterior equally. You will create two functional pieces, fired and glazed at my studio and ready in around four weeks.

Description

Stoneware vessel carving (introduction to Kurinuki)

Kurinuki, (literally, ‘to hollow out’) is a traditional Japanese ceramic technique that involves carving out a vessel from a solid block of clay. The method takes the opposite approach to crafting an item where material is taken away, rather than building up and adding from an initial lump of clay. In this way, the final form of your unique item is revealed gradually. Often described as meditative and sculptural, the short journey of this technique where the interior is as important as the exterior might surprise you. There will be time to create two artistic yet functional items which will be fired and glazed at my studio, ready for collection in approximately 4 weeks from the day of the session.
